Waves and Salvo is located south of the Rodanthe Pier and is worth checking out if you're in the area. Waves is known for its playful sandbars during the summer, making it a popular spot for surfers. You can find parking along the streets, but be sure to pull fully off the road. Salvo has some challenging access points and parking can be tricky, especially in busy seasons. There’s a shipwreck at the south end that can offer some unique surfing experiences, but make sure you’re all set with your tetanus shots before venturing near it.
The surf at Waves can be pretty good, especially when the swell is just right. You can expect waves ranging from 4ft to 8ft (about 1.2m to 2.4m), with swells coming from the Southeast, Northeast, and other directions. The beach breaks can provide both right and left waves, making it suitable for all levels—from beginners to experts. Low to mid tides are generally better, and the ideal wind directions are from the west or northwest. Salvo has its own charm where the conditions are similar, but the sand can shift often, so it's smart to check several spots. Crowds can be minimal, but some areas in Waves may get busy if waves are decent.
While you're out, keep an eye out for the shipwrecks as they can be a bit hazardous. The best time for surfing tends to be in the fall with tropical storms and nor’easters bringing in swell. Whether you prefer a shortboard, funboard, or longboard, you’ll find something for everyone on these beaches. Just be ready for some desolate ramps south of Salvo during the offseason where you can really make the most of your surfing experience.
