West Galveston surf guide

West Galveston is a surf spot located along FM 3005, heading southwest from Galveston towards Surfside Beach. It’s a laid-back area where you can find some nice peaks to ride, especially around Jamaica Beach and Bermuda Beach. The access is pretty easy, with parking available in the beachfront neighborhoods or different access points along the way. This spot typically sees fewer surfers, making it a good option if you’re looking for some quiet sessions.

The surf here can vary quite a bit. It handles swell sizes from 1 ft (0.3 m) to about 7 ft (2.1 m), which means you can catch waves suitable for all skill levels—beginners might find it manageable while experts can have fun on bigger days. The waves usually break over sand and come in from directions like east, southeast, and south, with right and left wave directions. Mid to high tides are the best times to hit the water, especially with northwest winds creating favorable conditions. On good days, you can see waist high to slightly overhead waves, and if everything comes together just right, this spot can turn into a sweet wave machine.

While the currents can be strong, especially near San Luis Pass, overall, the vibe at West Galveston remains mellow, making it a nice place to hang out. Drift sessions are common due to the consistent longshore currents, so be ready to paddle a bit. This spot is best during late summer to fall and also from late winter to mid-spring, giving you plenty of opportunities to catch some waves throughout the year. Bring along your shortboard, funboard, longboard, or fish, and enjoy the ride!
