Westport - The Cove surf guide

Westport - The Cove is one of the few reliable surf spots you’ll find along Washington’s Pacific coastline. It's located near Grays Harbor and is flanked by long rock jetties that help to shape the surf. This spot tends to attract a mix of locals and visitors, especially when the conditions are right. The Cove is a popular choice when the wind blows from the south, making it an ideal place to catch some waves with offshore winds and clean walls.

The Cove offers beach breaks that handle swell sizes starting from about 1 ft (0.3 m) and can really come to life with a good south or northwest swell. The waves can break both left and right, making it a versatile spot for surfers. Lower to mid tides are preferred here, as they tend to provide the best conditions. Expect some intensity, especially when it fires up with those A-frames. Keep in mind that conditions can shift quickly with the tide, leading to strong rips or even flat spots in no time.

If you’re heading to The Cove, the best wind is from the southeast, which really helps shape those clean waves. It's an intermediate level surf spot, so be prepared for some competition in the water. Crowds can build up, but it’s all part of the surf experience — just smile and take your turn! Getting to The Cove is straightforward, just make your way to Westhaven State Park for parking, which is generally not a problem, even though getting to this stretch of the coast can be a bit tricky.
