Westport is located on the west coast, known for its sandbars and appeal to surfers of all levels. The spot features the north end of Macrihinish Bay, and it offers a decent mix of waves when conditions align. The access point is straightforward, with a car park right at the corner of A89, giving you a good view of the beach.
The surf scene here can be a bit fickle, but when it’s on, it can deliver some nice rides. The optimal swell direction is from the west, which really gets the best waves rolling in. You can also catch swells from the northwest. This spot can handle swell sizes starting from about 2ft (approximately 0.6 meters) and breaks over uneven reef and sand. You’ll find both left and right waves here, making it versatile for various surfers. For the best experience, it’s best to surf at low to mid tide, and if the wind is coming from the east, that’s a real bonus.
It's important to keep in mind that the conditions can change, so always check the forecast before heading out. This spot can be epic when everything comes together, but don't be surprised if it can also feel a bit below average at times. Enjoy the session, whatever the day brings!
