Whitney Beach is located further south on Longboat Key, right across from the Whitney Shopping Center. This surf spot can be a bit unpredictable due to shifting sands, but it generally catches good north swells. It’s pretty much the only place to surf between Bradenton and Venice, which is about 40 miles south. Just a heads up, parking can be tricky, so it's best to leave your car to the south or on a nearby side street. Be mindful of the submerged pilings toward the south of the beach.
This spot works well with swells coming from NW, NNW, and other north directions. It can handle swell sizes from around 1 ft (0.3 m) to 4 ft (1.2 m). You can expect beach breaks that roll both left and right, making it suitable for various surfer abilities, from beginners to intermediates. The best time to catch some clean waves is during low to mid tides without heavy winds. North to east winds are preferred for the best conditions.
There are usually not many surfers around, so you might get lucky with some quality waves and have the place to yourself. The local vibe is pretty laid-back, making it a chill spot to hit when the conditions are right. If you're looking for a change of pace in your surf routine, Whitney Beach during the fall to spring season might just be worth checking out.
