Wilderness is located at the northern tip of the island and offers a remote beach experience surrounded by a stunning mountainous jungle backdrop. Accessing this spot requires a decent walk, but it's worth it for those looking to escape the crowds. The location sees its fair share of surfers, but it’s not overly packed, giving you some space to enjoy the waves.
The surf here is mainly a right point break that really shines with an overhead north swell, which translates to around 2 meters. It can handle swell sizes up to about 6 feet (1.8 meters), making it a good spot for intermediate surfers. The optimal swell direction is from the north, but it also picks up northwest and northeast swells. The waves break over dead coral, so watch your step. For the best conditions, look for south winds and be ready to surf at low, mid, or high tide.
If you're planning to surf Wilderness, be prepared for a bit of a trek. The nearby parking is at the garbage dump, and you might find more peaks there, which can be another option if you're willing to walk. Just keep in mind that while you can catch some decent waves, the spot scores a 3 for consistency, so it’s not always going to be epic.
