More about Wilkes Pass surfspot

To the N of Tavarua is Wilkes Pass named after a group of pirates who escaped from the village warriors through the reef pass here. It’s a high tide right with long, fast, barreling waves finishing with a bowly inside section. Like most of Fiji’s rights, it is sensitive to SE trade winds, so consistency suffers.

Glassy, rainy days are the best time for regular footed intermediates to surf it. Further north is the peak at Desperations, an exposed tip of the Malolo barrier reef where everyone ends up on those small swell days. N winds or glassy for both breaks.
