Wilkes Pass is located just north of Tavarua and has a unique history linked to pirates who once escaped through its reef pass. This spot offers a right-hand wave that tends to barrel, especially at high tide. It's one of those spots that can be fun, but don't expect it to be consistently great.
The waves here work best with a southwest swell, favoring surf sizes around 3 ft (0.9 meters). Reef breaks create its signature right-hand waves, and they can get pretty fast and hollow, ending with a nice inside section that has a bit of bowly action. The winds should ideally come from the northeast to make the most out of the waves, but like other spots in Fiji, the southeast trade winds can mess with the conditions. It's a place best suited for intermediate surfers who are comfortable with a bit of challenge.
On glassy, rainy days, the waves really come alive, making it a good time for regular-footers to catch some fun rides. If the swell is small, you might want to check out Desperations to the north, but on a good day, Wilkes Pass can deliver some decent waves. Make sure to keep an eye on the tide; it really shines during high tide!
