Windmills - Guantanamo surf guide

Windmills is a surf spot located inside the Guantanamo Bay military base on the south coast of Cuba. It’s a known spot for surfers looking for something a bit off the beaten path. This area is mostly restricted, so access can be tricky, but those who make the journey often find it worth their while. The surf breaks here are not incredibly consistent, so timing and swells are important to consider.

This spot features a ledgy and unpredictable right-hand reef break that works best with south-east to south-west swell. Windmills can handle swell sizes starting from about 1ft (0.3 meters), but it really shines under the right conditions. The waves break over dead coral, offering a unique feel for intermediate surfers looking to test their skills. The ideal wind direction is north-east, which helps to shape the waves nicely. It’s also good to know that this location can work during low, mid, and high tides, giving surfers some flexibility.

While Windmills is the main attraction, the surrounding area of the south coast has more to offer when the conditions aren’t right here. Other spots to check out include Cajobabo rivermouths, as well as Playa Juragua for some left-handers and Playa Aguadores or Playa Mar Verde for beach break peaks. If you’re in the area, it’s worth exploring these other locations when Windmills isn’t cooperating.
