Witches Rock (Roca Bruja) surf guide

Witches Rock, also known as Roca Bruja, is a surf spot located near Playa Naranjo. This place is famous for its striking rock formation that juts out into the ocean, creating a unique backdrop. The beach itself stretches about 6 km and is part of a stunning natural environment. The area is mostly accessible by boat from Playa del Coco or via a rough 4X4 track during the dry season, making it a bit of an adventure to get there. Just keep in mind that there’s no accommodation nearby, so if you plan to stay overnight, you'll need to camp.

When it comes to surfing, Witches Rock serves up some pretty decent waves. The optimal swell direction is from the Southwest, with South and West swells also working well. You can expect to handle swell sizes around 4 ft (about 1.2 meters), which makes it suitable for beginners looking to improve their skills. The waves break over sand and can come in both left and right directions. The best time to catch waves here is during mid to high tides, especially with a favorable NorthEast wind. Most surfers tend to gather just south of the rivermouth, where the sandbars create good peaks, but there are always more waves if you head further south.

Over the past few years, Witches Rock has seen a significant increase in crowds, so be prepared to share the waves. Also, keep in mind that there are some saltwater crocodiles around the rivermouths, so stay aware of your surroundings while enjoying the surf. Overall, it’s a fun spot with a mix of waves that can cater to different skill levels, but it can get busy, so you might want to plan your visit accordingly.
