Woody Head surf guide

Woody Head is a surf spot located near the Woody Heads campground. This place is known for its scenic backwater environment, which often sees a lack of crowds, making it a nice getaway for surfers looking to catch some waves. The surrounding area has more options, including Frasers Reef to the south and the expansive beachbreaks of Bundjalung National Park to the north, providing various exploration opportunities for surfers.

The surf at Woody Head works best with a southeast swell, which can reach sizes around 3 feet (about 0.9 meters). Most of the action happens on a line of reef directly in front of the campground, where the breaks predominantly feature rights but also include some lefts. The reef can get a bit uneven, so it’s essential to be cautious. The spot is mainly suited for intermediate surfers and can handle swells coming from the northeast and south as well. The wind from the west is preferable, and the waves seem to shape up well during low, mid, and high tide.

In addition to the waves, the area is a beautiful spot with access to endless beachbreaks northward, but they’re rarely surfed, offering some quiet sessions. Check out places like Blakc Rocks campsite or Jerusalem Creek if you’re looking for something different. Overall, Woody Head is a decent choice for a surf day, provided you check the conditions first!
