Overview
Xi-Chong - Dongshong is a sand-bottomed beach break on the mainland coast of Guangdong province, where surf spots are few and far between along a deeply indented shoreline of flat rocks and granite islets. Longboard waves peel lazily down rivermouth-sculpted sandbars here, and there's plenty of rocky coast nearby to explore.
When It Works
The banks throw both lefts and rights, drawing swell from north to east, with northeast the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, giving a decent working window when the swell shows. It can be somewhat inconsistent, so it pays to catch it when the setup lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind to clean things up. The bank can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
With gentle, lazy peelers and a quiet lineup, this is a friendly spot for beginners finding their feet.
Access
There's free roadside parking, and nearby Dongchong has clean beach-hut accommodation and restaurants close to the surf.
