Yokino is located a little south of Nishinoomote, which is the main settlement of Tanegashima. It features a beautiful, white sand beach that’s perfect for a chill day by the waves. The spot has various hollow peaks, and you’ll find some reefs in the center and at the southern end of the beach. The area has some little stream mouths that can shape the straight banks, offering a unique surf vibe.
The best swell direction for Yokino is from the SouthWest, but it also works with NorthWest swells. You can catch waves here that handle sizes from about 1 ft to around 2.5 meters. The breaks can happen over both boulders and sand, and you can hit left and right waves depending on the conditions. It’s a decent place for beginners to get their feet wet, especially since it can work on low, mid, and high tide. The preferred wind direction is from the East, which helps keep the waves clean and fun.
During the typhoon season, from July to October, the northeast coast can hold larger swells that make Yokino a bit more exciting. So if you’re looking to have some fun, keep an eye on the conditions during that time. Overall, it’s a nice spot for surfers of all levels, particularly those just starting out and looking to practice their skills on manageable waves.
