Anahola Bay surf guide
Surf: General: Anahola Bay is a mellow spot that is good for all levels (depending on swell size). Located on the northeastern lobe of the island, the waves break beyond a tranquil inside, out on the northern edge of the barrier reef. The main wave, which breaks over reef and is only for intermediate to experienced surfers when the waves are pumping. Anahola has a wide swell window to the North Pacific and favors S-to-W wind during the passage of storm fronts, which are common in the winter months. That's when Anahola is at its best.
Tides: Low to medium
Size: Head high-2X overhead+
Wind: Calm or offshore from the SE to SW for the right point.
Swell: N to NE to E
Bottom: Reef for the point. Sand inside the bay.
Paddling: The paddle out is not hard, just long to the top of the point. With a point break, the longer the rides then longer the paddle back.
Spot Rating: Very consistent spot with the steady easterly tradeswell, but usually accompanied by onshore easterly trade winds as well for unfavorable conditions. Best days are with a N to NE swell and an approaching front bringing S to SW wind, which is not very often.
Access: Easy. Enter the water either from anywhere on the sandy beach in the bay.
Crowds: Crowd Factor: Usually minimal
Local Vibe: Usually mellow. Be cool and keep it that way.
Environment: Pristine most of the time. There is a rivermouth in the bay that will flow during periods of significant rain.
Hazards: Sections of shallow reef, currents, sharks.
Season: Winter is best. Tradeswell in summer can be OK, at least rideable, but usually with onshore wind.
