Arbroath is a beach break located just south of the town. It's not a regional classic, but it offers over 3 km of sheltered surfable beach. The surf here mainly features a left point at the north end, which can show some potential but really needs a decent swell to work well. You'll find banks that create mostly left-hand waves along a lengthy stretch of sand, but they can close out on bigger days, especially when the swell is rippy.
The spot handles swells from 0.6m to 2m (2ft to 6ft) and works best with a north-easterly (NE) swell. You can expect a mix of left and right waves breaking over sand, with the best time to surf being during mid to high tide. The preferred wind direction is from the west (W), and while it’s generally friendly for beginners and intermediates, be cautious of rip currents when the waves get bigger. The waves can be fun on their day, particularly when you find that sweet balance of size.
Access is straightforward with parking available on Queens Drive, but be aware that access points further south can be limited due to railway lines. The crowd factor is usually quiet, which adds to the relaxed vibe, and locals are known to be friendly. The best season to hit Arbroath is during the winter months, from December to February, when the spot really comes alive with the right conditions.
