Auroville is located on the east coast of Tamil Nadu, just out of the way of the Sri Lankan swell shadow. It’s close to Pondicherry and features steep beaches along with a few jetty breaks. This spot can get decent when the monsoon swells roll in, but don’t expect consistent waves every day.
The surf here is generally beginner-friendly, with waves that break over sand. You can catch lefts and rights, and the spot handles swell sizes starting at about 1ft (0.3 meters). The optimal swell direction is Southeast, and you’ll also get some action from East and South swells. For the best conditions, aim for low to mid tide and a west wind, which really helps the waves to shape up nicely.
In terms of crowds, Auroville rates around a 4, so it’s not too busy, but you might still find some other surfers out there during peak times. The overall consistency isn’t through the roof, but there are definitely days when the waves can catch your interest, especially if you’re just starting out.
