Back Beach is a surf spot that you might want to check out if you’re around. It’s pretty laid back and doesn’t get too crowded, which is a bonus if you’re looking to surf in peace. The beach has some unique features, but keep in mind that it can be a bit tricky to surf here due to the harsh conditions. For the most part, it’s not a super popular spot, so you'll often have the waves to yourself.
The waves at Back Beach can be decent, especially during S swells, where you’ll find a hollow right-hand beachbreak. Just be cautious of the shallow coral patches that can catch you off guard. On NE to E swells, the left at the north end really picks up, offering a more hollow and exciting ride, although it’s more suitable for bodyboarders due to the sharp reef. You can handle swell sizes from about 0.6 m (2 ft) and expect this spot to be best with low to high tides. The preferred wind direction is from the northwest, so plan your sessions accordingly. This spot is best for expert surfers since it can get challenging.
Keep an eye on the conditions; it can often be blown-out. But if the winds are right, it’s worth the trip. Remember to be aware of the reef and any shallow areas—better to take it easy if you're not fully up for the challenge. Catch the swell coming from the northeast or south for your best chances at some good rides!
