Banyans is one of the most popular surf spots on the Kailua-Kona side of the Big Island. It's right off the main road, making it easy to access, and sits in front of the Kona Bali Kai condos. This location gets a lot of traffic, especially when the waves are chest high or above, attracting both locals and visitors. The environment here is pretty pristine, but expect it to be crowded, especially with the best surfers around. It’s a place where humility and respect go a long way.
The surf at Banyans can be a bit tricky but rewarding. It breaks year-round, usually clean in the mornings thanks to an easterly wind pattern. The break offers both lefts and rights, with the right tending to offer good turn sections and the possibility of a barrel. It empties into deeper water, while the left can provide a nice open barrel on takeoff but often ends in a closeout over shallower reef. On the summer S to SW swells, you can expect fun waves ranging from 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet). In the winter, the NW to WNW swells deliver solid, manageable surf when other spots are maxed out. The ideal swell direction is SW, and it handles various sizes from 1 to 3 meters. Tides can be low, mid, or high, and paddling varies from fairly short on smaller days to more challenging when the surf picks up.
If you're planning to surf here, be mindful of the local vibe; it's competitive but can also be fun once you know the lay of the land. The spot caters mainly to expert surfers, so be prepared to show your skills. The bottom is uneven reef, so watch for urchins and keep a keen eye on your surroundings. Surfboards of all types are welcome, including shortboards, funboards, longboards, and even bodyboards, but do keep in mind that showing respect to locals and other surfers is key to enjoying your time at Banyans.
