Barra Vieja surf guide

Barra Vieja is located just a few miles south of Acapulco, where the coastline curves and faces true south. This spot is known for its beachbreaks that can produce some good barrels, especially in the right conditions. While it's not the northernmost point of the area famous for its sand-bottom waves, Barra Vieja is definitely worth a visit if you're looking for some surf close to Acapulco.

The surf at Barra Vieja is influenced by a variety of swell directions, including South-East, South, and South-West, handling sizes from around 4 feet (about 1.2 meters) up to 12 feet (approximately 3.6 meters). The waves break over sand, featuring both right and left-handers. When conditions align, you can find some fun waves here, although it can turn into closeout situations with bigger swells. The best wind directions are from the North or Northeast, and surfing is possible during all tide stages, with low to mid tides often being preferable.

This spot is relatively easy to access and crowds are usually spread out, giving you room to catch waves. It's a good option for surfers of various skill levels, from beginners to experts. Keep in mind that the best time to hit Barra Vieja is from April to November when the swells are more consistent.
