Boca Grande surf guide

Boca Grande is located at the end of a long stretch of sand, right before the islands that block Charlotte Harbor. It's the only surf spot you can reach without a boat in the area. While it might not be the most famous surf destination, it still offers some opportunities worth checking out, especially for those nearby.

The surf at Boca Grande can be pretty hit-or-miss. It generally handles swell sizes from 2 to 5 feet (about 0.6 to 1.5 meters). The best swell directions are from the North, Northwest, and Northeastern angles. You can expect beach breaks here, with the bottom primarily consisting of sand. The spot is most workable on low to mid tide and can cater to surfers of various skill levels—beginners, intermediates, and even some experts can find something to ride on their day. Ideal winds are from the North, North-northeast, and East, keeping things fun and manageable.

While the crowd factor is minimal, don't expect to be completely alone. Also, it's worth keeping in mind that access can cost you a bit, so bring some cash. Boca Grande works best in the fall and spring, and during hurricane season, you're more likely to catch some waves. Just watch out for the occasional stingray and sharks if you venture out.
