Bogue Pier surf guide
Surf: This seasonally crowded pier provides easy access to above average waves. Picks up swell from the E, right around to SW and any N in the wind will be offshore.
Access: Free in winter only
Environment: Keep 250ft (83m) from Bogue Pier and pay to park in summer. Other piers on the island do not allow or tolerate surfing in the vicinity as part of an old and ongoing battle between surfers and fishermen (pier owners). Rules change annually at various breaks, like the Sheraton Hotel Pier, for instance, which is under new ownership and has eliminated public surfing access.
Surf: General: The Bogue Inlet Pier is one of the best waves in Emerald Isle. This place has some good shorebreak when it's on, and the Point (it's not really a point) breaks similar to the pier, except that it's better on a bigger swell.
Tides: Low to mid tide
Size: Chest high-overhead
Wind: North
Swell: S, SE
Bottom: Sand
Paddling: Pretty mellow unless there is a big E or SE swell and the current kicks in.
Spot Rating: Waves on both sides of the pier depending on the swell direction.
Access: Current rates: $5 for 1st hour or $20 per day Fri, Sat, Sun & Holidays only.
Crowds: Crowd Factor: Fairly mellow.
Local Vibe: Locals are pretty mellow.
Environment: Not bad.
Hazards: Fisherfolk.
Season: Storm dependent: tropical cyclones in the late summer and fall with frontal activity from late fall through winter into spring.
