Brighton - Marina surf guide

Brighton - Marina is a popular surf spot for local surfers, especially during the winter months. It’s best when the southwest storms roll in, creating waves in a sheltered corner on the eastern side of the marina. The atmosphere here can get busy, with many surfers gathering to catch the swells that come in when conditions are just right. However, it’s good to note that it can be a bit fickle and not every session will be awesome.

The surf tends to work well with a southwest swell, generally ranging from about 0.6 meters (2 ft) to around 2.4 meters (8 ft). The waves can be long and fun but often come in a bit slow and fat, rolling out before reforming. This spot features both left and right-breaking waves over an uneven chalk and flint reef. The tide works best from low to near high, and you'll usually find the wind blowing from the north or northeast, which helps keep things clean. A rip current helps with paddling out by the harbour wall when the surf is small, but it can get unruly in big storms, so be prepared for that.

Parking can be tough, so it's best to scout out spots at the top of The Cliff or down Cliff Rd. Access might not be straightforward due to ongoing sea defense work, so keep that in mind. The local vibe can be competitive with a dedicated crew watching the forecast closely, so expect to share the waves with skilled surfers. This is a spot for intermediate surfers looking to ride fun waves, and you can bring a variety of boards like shortboards, funboards, fish, longboards, and even SUPs or bodyboards. Just be mindful of the crowd and the occasional rips and groynes in the area.
