Bull Island is a unique wilderness spot that's only accessible by boat from Awendaw. You’ll need to take a hike across the island to get to the beachfront. This seven-mile-long island is well exposed to all swells, especially from the south and east, so you can usually expect to surf alone here. Keep in mind that there’s no camping allowed on the island.
When it comes to surfing, the beachbreak in front of the main trail can handle swell sizes from 3 to 6 feet (about 1 to 2 meters) on any given day. The waves are pretty scattered, breaking both left and right, which makes it fun for surfers of all skill levels—beginners, intermediates, and experts will all find something to ride. It works best on a low to mid tide, and you’ll want to be mindful of winds coming from the west or northwest for the best conditions. If you’re lucky enough to be here on a hurricane swell, get ready for some impressive size that’s likely bigger than most spots in the state.
Accessing Bull Island can be tricky since it’s only reachable by boat, so plan ahead. It’s generally not crowded at all, so you won’t have to worry about sharing waves. Just remember, the currents can get strong near the inlets, especially if the winds are blowing hard from the northeast or southwest, so keep an eye on conditions. The environment is usually pretty clean, although it can be cloudy most of the time. Just be aware that the waters can be sharkier than average, so it’s wise to stay cautious out there.
