Capitola Rivermouth surf guide

Capitola Rivermouth is a popular surf spot in the Santa Cruz area, attracting many surfers due to its gentle waves and easy access. This location features a beach that’s great for those looking to have some fun in the water, particularly in the summer and autumn seasons. It’s a favorite among beginners and longboarders, but be prepared for a crowd, especially when the weather is warm. The sandy landscape around the rivermouth adds to the beach vibe, although it can get busy during peak times.

The surf here is mainly right-hand waves that break over a mix of sand and rocky reef, suitable for surfers of all skill levels, though particularly nice for beginners. The waves can range from about 0.6 meters (2 feet) to 2.4 meters (8 feet) depending on conditions. Optimal swell direction is from the south, but it can also handle northwest swells. The jetty next to the river can produce some fun, small punchy rights, especially on clean winter days. You’ll find a shorter left off the back of the right that offers a bit more power for those looking to challenge themselves.

With a low tide being preferable, this spot is very easy to paddle out, making it an ideal place for those just starting with surfing. Funboards and longboards work well here, and while it’s not the most powerful wave in the area, it’s great for practicing and improving your skills. Just keep in mind that the crowd can be quite social, yet maintaining standard surf etiquette is important, as everyone is just looking to enjoy the waves.
