Overview
Chiggas is a consistent right-hand reef break north of Playa San Diego, sitting in front of the golf course and rivermouth. It's one of several high-tide reefs tucked against the rocks along this stretch of black-sand coast. Surfers like it because it holds a wide range of swell and offers an easy deepwater roll-in into barrel and turn sections. Just keep in mind the rivermouth can push pollution into the water after rain.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through west (S-W), with west swell the best match. It breaks right over uneven reef and stays fairly consistent. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind. The reef comes in on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
It suits intermediate surfers, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
