Chincoteague surf guide

Surf: The National Wildlife Refuge of Chincoteague is the southern end of Assateague Island and the surf displays all the characteristics of the MD waves to the north. If anything, the trench between the shorebreak and the outside sandbar is more pronounced so if the surf is small, pumping and bouncing is obligatory. Gets wild and out of control quickly and doesn’t tolerate any E winds. There is the possibility of scoring some longer lefts down at the horseshoe shaped southern point of the island on big NE swells. Consistent spot and rarely crowded. Environment: There’s no campground inside the Wildlife Refuge but there’s a few in Chincoteague itself. Breaks to the north of the carparks are foot access only while there is an Oversand Vehicle Route south to Toms Cove Hook once you’ve payed a hefty permit price to avoid the 3mile (5km) soft sand slog down to the lefts.
