Christies Reef is a popular surf spot located at Christies Beach, within the St Vincent Gulf. It’s easily accessible thanks to the Esplanade, which has plenty of parking. The spot is well-known among surfers, but keep in mind that it can be a bit hit-or-miss depending on the conditions. Generally speaking, summers can be pretty flat, so if you’re looking for big waves, you might be disappointed during those months.
The best time to surf at Christies Reef is when the swell is coming from the South or SouthWest, with optimal conditions when it’s around 2ft (0.6m). The waves break over an uneven reef and sand, offering both left and right waves that are suitable for beginners. Low to mid tide is when the spot shines, especially during a decent swell. If there are strong storms and gusty SW winds, you might find some uncomplicated lefts and rights that can reach headhigh, which is a good opportunity if you’re in the area.
Keep in mind that the shark threat is something to consider when surfing at the reef, as it is more pronounced in this area. When looking for alternative spots nearby, Y-Steps or the Hump can also offer good waves, thanks to the way the reef refracts the swell and can create some decent A-frames, adding a bit of power to your session.
