It is incredible that one end of a beach can be so good while the other corner remains one of the worst surfing beaches in Sydney. Having said that, the 'Roy offers a good chance for beginners to get some rides to themselves in E-SE windswells, when full, rolling waves give soft-toppers a chance to find their feet. When a big S hits, it tries to give the impression of a righthand point off the pool, but lumbers too much to be taken seriously. Just to the south, a rocky shelf offers rights at The Kick, but more commonly lefts at Brownwater, a hoaxy wave that shoulders off into deep water all too readily. There are more fickle waves nearby at The Pole and Fishermans, but the tide is crucial for all these spots with mid to high being a safer bet. S winds and big swells required.
Park behind the golf course or in the residential streets. Seaweed seems to invade this stretch regularly. There's some good snorkelling here on flat days.
