Overview
Drownies, also known as Tombstones, is a left-hand reef break that peels over live coral. It opens with an easy roll-in before speeding up and hollowing out along the exposed reef pass.
When It Works
The wave draws swell from northwest through northeast, with a northeast (NE) swell the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft and tends to be moderately consistent, so you can count on worthwhile windows when the setup lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a south (S) offshore wind. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one rewards intermediate surfers who can handle the speed once it starts to bend. Expect a quiet lineup when it's on.
Access
Reaching Drownies means a boat, since it's accessible by water only, and parking on land is restricted.
