El Chinchorro is a beachbreak located just east of the capital city, Santo Domingo. It’s easily accessible off the road near the oil tanks that sit by the main harbor. This spot resembles Playa Hermosa, offering a shifty surf experience that may look unimpressive from the shore but often surprises once you're in the water.
The surf here runs best with swells from the EastSouthEast to SouthSouthEast, handling sizes from 1 to 2 meters (3 to 6 feet). It mostly features both left and right breaks over a sandy bottom. The best tide for surfing is low to mid, and it’s ideal for intermediate to expert surfers due to the quick, short rides. Wind from the WestNorthWest, NorthWest, or North is preferred to keep conditions favorable. The paddling is pretty easy, making it convenient for surfers at this spot.
Typically, El Chinchorro isn’t too crowded, allowing for a more relaxed surf session. It’s a great option during the August to March season, offering a decent wave when the conditions come together. Just remember, you might want to bring a shortboard to enjoy the rides here!
