El Pelado surf guide

El Pelado is a surf spot located in Ecuador, known for its powerful and long right-hand waves. It’s best approached with a decent southwest swell and is more favorable during low to mid tides. This spot is popular among local surfers, but it can get crowded, especially on weekends with visitors coming from Guayaquil.

The wave at El Pelado tends to break over a mix of uneven reefs and sand, offering rides that can reach up to 300 meters. It typically favors a southwest swell for the best conditions, but it can handle swells of around 2 feet (0.6 meters) as well. Most surfers can expect a hollow section inside the waves, but getting to the barrel in front of the point can be tricky. It’s crucial to be aware that the south winds often blow out the surf, making the mornings the best time to catch a clean wave. If you’re comfortable with intermediate-level surfing, this spot might suit you, but be prepared to handle some sharp drops when the waves get overhead.

While El Pelado offers great rides, managing the crowds can be challenging, and it’s not the easiest spot to surf. Nearby points like El Faro, El Hambre, and Las Paso are also options, but they have sharp rocks that can be dangerous as well. Try to get in early before the winds pick up for a better chance at catching some clean waves.
