El Pico is a surf spot located in Ancash, around 194 kilometers from Lima. It’s known for its fickle righthand reef that can produce some solid waves when conditions are right. While the nearby town of Barranca offers a few lodging options and places to eat, the beaches there are generally just okay. If you're looking for a nice surf experience, El Pico might be your best bet in the area.
This spot works best with a small to moderate southwest swell, specifically when it’s hitting from the west and south. El Pico can handle swell sizes starting around 2 feet (0.6 meters) and gets much better during mid to high tide. When the conditions align, surfers can find powerful righthand tubes that cater mostly to intermediate surfers. The preferred wind direction is from the northeast, which helps to clean up the waves. However, on larger swells, this spot tends to shut down, so timing is key.
Be careful as the reef is uneven and can be sharp in spots. Urchins are also present, so make sure to watch your step. If you’re planning a trip, check the swell forecast to catch El Pico at its best!
