Forestry is a surf spot located on the south side of Te Arai Point, along the east coast north of Auckland. It's quite accessible if you're coming from Auckland, just head up the Northern Motorway and follow the winding roads through the countryside. The area features beach breaks that can cater to various skill levels, which makes it a popular choice for surfers looking to catch some waves.
The surfing conditions here are mainly suited for beginners, thanks to the reliable beach breaks. The optimal swell direction is NorthEast, and you can catch waves from around 1ft (0.3 meters) up. While there are waves on both sides, you’ll find lefts and rights breaking over sand. The preferable wind comes from the SouthWest, and it works best at low to mid to high tide, so keep an eye on the conditions. Just be aware that it can get crowded, especially on weekends when everyone flocks to the sweet left point during NE swells.
On bigger days, Forestry can close out, so if you're looking for some gnarly rights, you might want to head over to Goat Island instead. There's also plenty of peaks that stretch down Pakiri Beach, offering more options if you’re willing to explore a bit further. Overall, Forestry has something for everyone, especially if you're just starting out and looking for an easy day on the water.
