Gallé is located southeast of Hikkaduwa and is known for being a charming colonial town. While it's a nice place to explore, the surf is not always consistent here. A left wave breaks near the jetty just outside of town, but it doesn’t come around very often. In front of the old city walls within the town, there are some shallow reefs that might look promising, yet they rarely produce good waves.
The optimal swell direction for surfing at Gallé is from the southwest, but it can also handle swells coming from the south. It's best when the swell sizes are around 2 feet (about 0.6 meters). The waves break over dead coral, creating a reef setup that’s typically suited for intermediate surfers. When the wind is coming from the northeast, the conditions tend to be better. The tide can be low, mid, or high, and the waves generally break left, making for a decent session when everything aligns.
While Gallé is not the top spot for surfing in the area, it's worth checking out for a change of scenery. If you’re looking to catch some waves, it might be better to explore spots further west or east of Gallé where the surf tends to be more reliable.
