Gas Chambers is located a bit further down the beach from Toilet Bowl in Pacific City. It’s known for having a sand build-up that can create some stronger, larger waves when the conditions are right. This spot has become increasingly popular over the years, making it a go-to for both local and visiting surfers looking to catch some decent waves.
The surf here is best when the swell comes from the SouthWest, but it can also handle swells from the South and NorthWest. It works well with swell sizes starting at around 2ft (0.6 meters) and can deliver some solid punch, especially when the swell is smaller. Expect to find beach breaks that offer waves breaking both left and right. The best times to hit the water are during low to mid tides, but it can also be surfed at high tide. However, the waves can get hollow at lower tides and mushy as the tide climbs. It’s an ideal spot for intermediate surfers looking for a bit of a challenge.
Keep in mind that the main beachbreak can get crowded, especially on weekends and during the summer. On South winds, you might want to head north of Cape Kiwanda towards Tierra Del Mar, where you can often find some excellent beach break with better wind protection. Also, be aware of the local surf contest that happens every August; it's a fun gathering for the local surfing community.
