Gilleleje surf guide

Gilleleje is located at the most northerly point of Seeland. It's known for its open beach to the west of the large harbor and has some protection on the east side of the jetty. This spot can work pretty well, especially when the conditions are right, but it's not a guaranteed gem. It’s a good place to check if you’re around, but you have to manage your expectations and be ready to walk a bit to see the waves.

The waves at Gilleleje prefer a Northwest swell direction, and they can handle swell sizes starting from about 1ft (0.3 meters) and up. On a good day, the waves can break both left and right over the sandy bottom. The best wind direction is from the west, which helps to clean up the chop and give you better waves. Low to mid-tide is when Gilleleje works best, so plan your session accordingly. This spot can be great for beginners, especially when the conditions are mellow.

Access isn’t the easiest since you can’t tell if the waves are working from the parking lot. You’ll need to walk out onto the pier to take a look, which can be a bit of a trek. It’s also a better area for windsurfing, so keep that in mind if you’re into that as well. Just be sure to check the conditions before heading out for a session.
