Hammerhead surf guide

Hammerhead is a surf spot located on an offshore island, accessible only by boat. It has gained popularity in recent years, especially with the rise of surf camps and charters leaving from Nuevo Vallarta. The spot is known for its east coast reef, which allows it to pick up south swells throughout the summer, making it a decent choice for surfers looking for less crowded waves. However, it's important to note that while it can be fun, it might not be as consistent as some other surf spots.

The waves at Hammerhead can be surfed best when the swell direction comes from the South or SouthWest. The spot handles swell sizes starting at around 3 feet (approximately 0.9 meters) and features both left and right-breaking waves over an uneven reef. For the best experience, aim for low to mid tide, and keep in mind that the optimum wind direction is Northwest. This spot is more suited for intermediate surfers, so beginners might want to wait until they’re a bit more confident on their boards.

Since Hammerhead is a remote location, it doesn’t see as much foot traffic as more popular spots. This gives you a chance to enjoy a more laid-back surf session. Just remember to check the conditions before heading out, as they can change quickly.
