Hauru is located on the west-facing coast, near the town and the old Club Med, which gives it its name. It's a narrow cut in the fringing reef right by the Intercontinental on the north coast. The spot is known for being a bit tricky, especially for those who are not used to its specific conditions.
The surf here tends to favor left-handers, especially when the swell comes from the northwest. Hauru can handle swell sizes around 3 feet (about 1 meter). The waves are generally fast and shallow, making it a spot for intermediate surfers. The left at Hauru has a more manageable vibe compared to the right, which can be tough with sections that shut down quickly. Also, keep in mind that currents can get quite strong, so it's best to be aware and prepared when you head out.
If you're looking for a more relaxed ride, there’s an easier left back at the entrance to Opunohu Bay. The preferred wind direction here is from the south, and the spot is workable during low, mid, and high tides. Also, the nearby motus are known spots for shark diving, so you might want to check that out as well, but be cautious while surfing.
