Hobe Sound, also known as The Refuge, is located in the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge at the northern tip of Jupiter Island. This surf spot offers a mix of sandy beach breaks nestled in a picturesque and somewhat exclusive environment. Parking is paid year-round, and it can get crowded, so plan accordingly.
The surf here is best with mid to high tide, as low tide tends to hold back the swell on the outside bank. When conditions are right, surfers can expect to catch waves around 2 ft (0.6 m), with optimal swell coming from the Northeast, though North and Southeast swells can work too. There are both lefts and rights available, making it a versatile spot for different skill levels. On bigger days, especially with North swells, you might find some longer lefts linking through to the beach break. A half-mile out, there’s a reef that can help you gauge the approaching sets, but it’s primarily a sand break. This is a good place for beginners to practice their skills.
Keep an eye out for oyster shells in the shore break, which can catch you off guard. The waters around here can be a bit murky, so be aware of the local sea life. It’s also worth noting that there’s an unofficial nudist beach about a quarter mile north if that’s of interest. Overall, Hobe Sound/The Refuge offers a unique surfing experience with its natural setting, but patience is often needed to score the right waves.
