Isla Mujeres surf guide

Surf: General: The Yucatan is all but flat until the late-summer and autumn hurricanes show up in the Gulf of Mexico -- briefly spinning in okay surf that's quickly followed by raging, deadly weather. Isla Mujeres, nonetheless, is a quirky, quiet island situated about ten miles north of Cancun. Once there you will find a multitude of left and righthand reefbreaks that can perk up after a day or two of sustained onshore winds, or, as mentioned, during the brief hours prior to an approaching hurricane. Tides: All tides. Size: Waist high to slightly overhead Wind: West Swell: South-East Bottom: Reef/rock. Paddling: Light Spot Rating: Mediocre. Access: Get a boat from Cancun harbor. Crowds: Crowd Factor: Empty. Local Vibe: Mellow. Environment: Clean Hazards: Shallow reef/rock. Season: August-October
