Iztapa is a surf spot located near the fishing port of Iztapa in Guatemala. It's known for its unique setup created by the jetties at the port, which influence the wave conditions. The area can be hit or miss depending on the sand and swells, so keep an eye on the conditions before heading out. Surprisingly, itβs not often crowded, so you can usually find some space to paddle out and catch some waves.
The waves at Iztapa are best on southwest swells, with the optimal direction being from the southwest. They can handle sizes around 2ft (about 0.6 meters) to much larger, providing hollow sections when the sand is well-placed. There are also peaks that form between the jetties, offering a more protected option during bigger swells. While most of the waves break over sand, right-handers are the most common. A mid to high tide is preferred for better conditions, and the best winds come from the north. This spot is suited for intermediate surfers, as it can offer a fun challenge without being too overwhelming.
Aside from the surf, being in Iztapa gives you a good vibe as it's not overly crowded, making it feel laid back. Just remember that the waves can turn into close-outs if the sand shifts around, so stay aware of the conditions. Rips can be a factor, so make sure to manage your energy out in the water.
