K58/La Fonda surf guide

K58/La Fonda is a surf spot located just a short drive south of Rosarito, making it easily accessible, especially for surfers coming from San Diego. This spot gets busy, especially on weekends with tons of day-trippers. It's well-known among the ex-pat crowd, and though it's popular, the vibe is generally friendly with local surfers, and localism isn’t a huge issue here. The beach itself is pretty clean most of the time, and the scenery is decent for a fun day at the beach.

This place offers some of the best-shaped beach breaks in the area, with consistent barrel waves that break both left and right, especially near the river mouth. The swell directions that work best here are from the South and NorthWest, handling sizes from about 4 feet (1.2 meters) to 10 feet (3 meters). The low to mid tides are the sweet spots for surfing. The waves come in strong, so paddling out can be a workout, particularly when the swell is bigger. Intermediate surfers will have a good time here using shortboards, longboards, or fishes to catch the long, rippable lefts and rights.

For those looking to surf, the optimal wind direction is easterly. The spot features a river mouth that breaks over both sand and rocks, so be aware of your surroundings when you’re out there. It's best to visit during the summer and autumn seasons when the southern swells roll in. Just keep in mind that it can get crowded, so be ready to share the waves!
