Kolekole surf guide

Kolekole is a surf spot located near the Kolekole Stream, which flows from the well-known Akaka Falls. It's a right/left dumping peak that can be accessed easily, although the road leading down to the beach park is pretty steep. This spot is known for its occasional decent waves, and while it can get crowded, you’ll often find it not too busy.

The waves here typically handle swell sizes from 5ft to 15ft (about 1.5 to 4.5 meters), and they break over lava, rock, and coral. You can expect both right and left waves, but it’s better suited for bodysurfing and bodyboarding rather than shortboarding, although it does have its moments for those on a shortboard. Winds are best when they come from the south or southwest, making the waves pretty clean. Mid to high tides are preferred for a better experience, and don’t forget the currents can get tricky sometimes.

While the best surf generally happens in the winter, Kolekole can break year-round, especially during hurricane swells. It’s wise to keep an eye on the swell directions, as it works well with swells coming from the north, northeast, and southeast. Just remember to grab your bodysurfing or bodyboard gear when heading out. Locals appreciate respect and humility, so keep that in mind while you're out there!
