La Barra - Likin surf guide

La Barra - Likin is a surf spot located along the long stretch of coastline in Guatemala, specifically between Puerto San Jose and Monterrico. This area is known for its beautiful scenery and a mix of beach resorts. It's around 5km (3mi) from Puerto San Jose and features one of the only high-end coastal resorts in the country. The surf at La Barra - Likin is notable, making it a place worth checking out for surfers of all levels, especially those with some experience.

The waves here work best with a southwest swell, but you can also catch some action from southeast swells. The surf can handle sizes around 2ft (0.6m) for the most part. The main wave direction is to the right, with conditions often peaking during low to mid and high tides. While the right is generally more fun, it's worth noting that the left off the peak can become tricky and usually leads to rocks. The best time to hit the water is during low incoming tides or even at slack high tides, especially on bigger swells. You'll want to be an intermediate surfer to handle the sucky take-offs and the strong currents that can get pretty wild on dropping tides.

While there is a surf camp nearby, overall, crowds don’t tend to be a significant issue. The shifting sandbars can change the wave quality from time to time, so it’s good to keep an eye on conditions. Local surfers sometimes come from Puerto San Jose, but it generally won’t feel too crowded. Just keep in mind that while La Barra - Likin is a decent spot, beginners may find it a bit challenging. There are easier beach breaks nearby if you're just starting out.
