Loco surf guide

Loco is a surf spot that faces due southwest, making it a good choice for those looking to catch some decent waves. It's roughly a half-hour hike from the nearest camp, which can be a trek, but the effort usually pays off. While it pulls in plenty of swell, especially in the off-season, it's a bit exposed to the wind, so conditions can be mixed. Not the easiest spot, it tends to be bigger, faster, and gnarlier than some of the other nearby points, which is why it carries the somewhat ironic Spanish name.

When it comes to surfing at Loco, the optimal swell direction is south, with additional waves coming from the west. The spot can handle swell sizes starting from about 2 feet (0.6 meters) and breaks over boulders and sand. Surfers can expect mostly point breaks with left-hand waves. If you're planning your session, the best wind direction is northeast, and you can surf this spot at low, mid, or high tide. It's generally suited for intermediate surfers, so be prepared for some more challenging conditions.

Locals have affectionately renamed this spot "Turtles," which hints at the kind of vibe you might find here. Keep in mind that, due to its location and hiking distance, it doesn’t see as many crowds as other surf spots, giving you a chance to enjoy some more space in the water.
