Main Break is located along the remote stretch of the Skeleton Coast, 130km (80mi) from Swakopmund. This surf spot is part of the Fur Seal Reserve at Cape Cross, where you can get a slice of some decent waves. It’s a unique area, known for its massive seal population and rugged environment. Be prepared for a bit of a drive on salt roads, and keep in mind that the park officials can be strict about surfing regulations here.
The surf at Main Break can be pretty fun, especially when the swell is coming from the Southwest. It handles swell sizes starting from 2ft (0.6m) and can really get going with some solid South and West swells. The waves typically break over uneven reef, forming long lefts that can offer some nice rides. For the best experience, try to catch it on mid to high tide, with a favorable wind coming from the East. If you're looking for more variety, just down the point you’ve got Graveyards, which is a faster and hollow section, but it’s a bit more on the rocky side.
Despite its good waves, remember to respect the area. Surfing was once banned here, and there’s always a chance that the rules could tighten up again if surfers act up. Make sure to pay the access fee of $1.50 per person and $1.50 per car. The nearest basic campsite is around 40km (25mi) to the south, near the mile 72 post. If you're in need of a quick bite, there’s a small restaurant at the seal factory nearby, but don’t expect anything fancy.
