Matagorda is a surf spot located halfway between Galveston and Port Aransas, Texas. It sits on the Matagorda Peninsula and is known for producing some solid waves in the northern part of the state. The deeper waters of the Colorado River inlet channel focus the swell onto shallow sandbars, making this area a go-to for surfers looking for some action. Generally, it’s not as crowded as you might expect, which can make for a more enjoyable session.
The waves at Matagorda can be pretty powerful, often ranging from chest-high to a few feet overhead (around 1-3 meters). You’ll find barrels that can hollow out nicely, especially on decent swells. The optimal swell direction is East, but it also handles swells from the NorthEast and South well. The spot works best with NW winds, and you can catch waves breaking both left and right over the sandy bottom. During the right conditions, the waves can get heavy, so it’s best suited for intermediates and above. You should aim for low to mid tides for the best experience and be ready for strong currents—drift sessions are the norm here.
Accessing Matagorda is relatively easy, but do keep in mind it's a bit remote. While the waves are strong, the local vibe is generally positive as long as you show respect. Be aware of the potential hazards like shallow bottoms and alligators if you’re planning to paddle across the river. It's worth noting that the best season for surfing here is in late summer to fall, and again in late winter to mid-spring, when the waves are most consistent.
