More about Matanzas Inlet surfspot

This is the last remaining natural entrance to Florida’s Intracoastal Waterway. Lack of jetties means the sand moves around a lot, and the currents run strong. Check from the bridge to figure out which side is working best on any given day. If the sand lines up, long rides are possible.

General: The north and south sides both break well, but the best spot is smack in the middle of the Inlet. The problem is, it's shark-infested. There are some really good areas though, especially for longboarding with long gently breaking waves. The southern area of this beach is well suited for surfers of all ability levels. Tides: Low to incoming Size: Thigh-2x overhead Wind: W Swell: NE-ENE-E Bottom: Sand Paddling: Lots of paddling on those far outside days; easy when it's smaller longboard type surf. Spot Rating: There is an outside wave when bigger that involves some paddling. South of the inlet it breaks closer in and is a very good longboard wave, even when small.

Park on the hill on the south side.

Fall-Spring, Hurricane

Crowd Factor: Light - just you and the fish. Local Vibe: None really.

Crowds of surfers aren’t the problem, but the crowds of ‘men in gray suits’ could be. There is also a fair amount of motorized traffic. No facilities.

Looks murky but some of this are natural tannins that come out of local rivers.

Big fish.
