Meia Praia is a long, crescent-shaped beach located just across the rivermouth from Lagos. It offers a sheltered spot for surfers, mainly coming to life during the winter swells. While the waves can be inconsistent, when they do show up, surfers can find some surprisingly good lefts and rights, often fast and hollow. It's not just for advanced surfers; beginners can also enjoy a session here, especially when the conditions are right.
The surf at Meia Praia works best with huge swells coming from the South, South-Southwest, and Southwest, and it typically handles sizes from about 3ft (1 meter) to 6ft (2 meters). The waves break over a sandy bottom and can create both beach and jetty breaks. You can expect to ride both lefts and rights. The best wind directions for this spot are from the Northwest, North-Northwest, North, and North-Northeast. It’s a mellow spot suitable for all surfing abilities, from beginners to experts, with peaks that work best at low to mid tides, and even better at high tide.
Access to Meia Praia is easy, with parking available at the breakwater. The crowd factor tends to be pretty low, giving surfers a more relaxed experience. In terms of gear, a range of boards works well here, including shortboards, funboards, longboards, fishes, SUPs, and bodyboards. December to February is typically the best time to hit this beach for surf action.
