Overview
Newport Reef, also known as The Path or simply The Reef, is a right-hand reef break that peels over a mix of uneven reef and sand. It has an easier roll-in and long walls with plenty of crumbly shoulder to work with, so there is room to move your feet. The take-off zone is spread out and the waves are fairly forgiving, which makes it a calmer, less intense option than the nearby Peak.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with east swell the best match. It is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, so it can hold some sizeable days as well as smaller ones. East swells tend to bring out its best, though it is somewhat inconsistent and will not be on every time you check.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southwest offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from the south through to the west. It breaks on low and mid tide, and mid tide on an east swell is the pick, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a solid option for intermediates and anyone still building confidence, thanks to the spread-out peak and more forgiving waves. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works. Keep an eye out for scattered rocks. Experts after more of a challenge sometimes head further out to Crosswaves, off the island.
Access
There is a car park with free parking, along with paid and roadside options. You will also find restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop.
