Little Avalon is a surf spot located just below the cliffs to the south of the main beach. It’s known for its super-sucky, slab-hugging righthand pit that can be a challenge even for experienced surfers. The access path can be slippery, so be careful when you're heading down. It’s a spot that attracts dedicated surfers looking for a thrill, but it's not the most inviting setup for beginners.
The wave here works best with a southeast swell direction, but it can also handle easterly and southerly swells. Ideally, the swell sizes should be around 3ft (about 0.9 meters) for the best rides. The waves break over a rocky ledge, producing right-hand reef waves that can deliver some serious barrels, especially at mid tide. With winds blowing from the west, the conditions can line up nicely, but be prepared for a quick lurch onto the ledge, where air-drops are common. This spot is definitely suited for expert surfers given its technical nature and challenging conditions.
While it’s primarily known for its intense surf, keep in mind that there are sharp bits all over the place, so watch your step. The combination of the rock ledge and the fast waves makes it essential to have a solid skill set if you’re looking to charge Little Avalon. Make sure you're ready for the buzz that comes with threading those cavernous barrels beneath thicker-than-normal lips, like many bodyboarders do here.
